Remote Support in a Snowstorm

As an early user of Impella Connect®, Dr. David Zlotnick describes how this technology, which allows remote visualization of Automated Impella® Controller (AIC) console data, has been valuable to his team at the University of Buffalo. Dr. Zlotnick is an interventional cardiologist and assistant professor of medicine at University of Buffalo.

Dr. Zlotnick relays a particular case to interviewer Dr. Seth Bilazarian. “We had an interesting case in January where a patient came in in cardiogenic shock after myocardial infarction. It also happened to be in Buffalo, New York in January so it was in the middle of a pretty big snowstorm!” Dr. Zlotnick explains that the Abiomed representative couldn’t make it to the hospital in the storm but was able to use Impella Connect to help nurses in the cath lab set up and troubleshoot while the team was putting in Impella and initiating support. “We were also able to utilize that technology to monitor the patient throughout the weekend with the critical care team. So it was very helpful from our standpoint.”

Dr. Bilizarian explains that Impella Connect is a remote technology available on mobile devices as well as web-based platforms. It is a valuable tool for the clinical team in the hospital as well as for the Abiomed Clinical Support Center (CSC) team. Dr. Zlotnick describes how he’s used Impella Connect on his mobile phone. “Over the past few months we've been able to utilize it to monitor patients when we're not onsite in the clinical hospital to help the clinical teams—the cardiac critical care unit, the nursing staff, and fellows, and attendings in the CCU service—to help monitor and manage the patient. So that technology has been very helpful for when we're not in the hospital to keep an oversight of these patients.” He sees troubleshooting as the most common use for Impella Connect, but he also uses Impella Connect to check on patient hemodynamics and uses that data for clinical decision making.

Impella Connect® Intended Use:

Impella Connect® transfers a video image of the screen on the Automated Impella® Controller to an authorized remote user. The transmitted image can be viewed by authorized remote user. The users can include the hospital's clinicians, Abiomed local support staff, and Clinical Support Center (CSC) team members.
