Current Approaches to Coronary Calcification
In this session presented at the CCVVC 2017 Symposium, Ajay J. Kirtane, MD, SM, describes coronary calcification and its impact on complex high-risk interventional procedures. During the presentation, Dr. Kirtane describes how calcification may impair stent delivery or expansion. Additionally, he explains the ACCF/AHA/SCAI 2011 percutaneous coronary intervention guidelines for the treatment of calcified lesions. Dr. Kirtane also discusses recent studies which demonstrate the utility of rotational atherectomy during the treatment of coronary calcifications. Specifically, he discusses the findings of the ROTAXUS trial, which assessed outcomes of patients undergoing rotational atherectomy plus TAXUS stent. In addition, Dr. Kirtane expands on the use of laser atherectomy in the setting of total occlusions.
