The National Cardiogenic Shock Initiative

(NCSI)

Started by William O’Neill, MD, in 2016, the initiative began as a collaboration between four different Detroit-area hospital systems with the goal of improving mortality in patients suffering from cardiogenic shock. The life-saving initiative now includes a variety of hospitals nationwide. Partnering hospital systems use a defined protocol for treatment of AMI patients in cardiogenic shock which includes quick placement of the Impella® heart pump, PCI, and right heart monitoring to rapidly reduce the use of inotropes.
